Cricket are mourning the loss of Peter Harris.
A well-known and highly-respected figure in the game,
Peter died last week at the age of 71.
Born in Kent, he started his playing career as a
wicketkeeper and batsman with Reading before switching to
Finchampstead.
He later took up umpiring and went on to become chairman of
the Berkshire Umpires Officials Association.
He also became closely involved with the Berkshire county
team, and for the past four seasons carried out the duties
of their administration manager, attending all home and
away matches, with the utmost efficiency.
The Berkshire players will miss him hugely, as they held
him in high esteem. They often chatted about instances
relating to the Laws of Cricket and listened with respect
to his opinion.
He also supported Reading Football Club and was a
season-ticket holder at Madejski Stadium.
Away from sport, he spent much of his life in the
banking industry and was a bank manager.
Peter,
who lived in Kerris Way, Earley, was admitted to Royal
Berkshire Hospital in May, where he was diagnosed with
cancer.
He is survived by wife Phyllis and three sons.
His memorial service was held at the Methodist Church in
Gosbrook Road, Caversham.
Berkshire held a minute’s silence before their championship
game with Cheshire on Sunday (11am) at Finchampstead.
